Gioya Carter shoots a floater during a 42-73 loss to the Cowgirls in Gallagher Iba Arena in Stillwater Saturday. TYLER DRABEK/For The Tulsa World

Notes: The push toward both the stretch run of the Big 12 Conference season must begin this afternoon for an Oklahoma team plagued by inconsistency. The Sooners can’t afford an uneven effort against the No. 6 Longhorns, or else they’ll fall further off the pace in the league standings (they enter the contest in fifth place, a game behind both Oklahoma State and West Virginia and well back of first place Baylor and Texas). ... OU is playing pretty well offensively. Gioya Carter and reserve Vionise Pierre-Louis continue to surge, with Pierre-Louis threatening veteran Kaylon Williams’ place in the starting lineup. Guard Derica Wyatt return to the lineup at Kansas State last Tuesday and responded with 15 points. ... OU’s problem against the Wildcats was on the defensive end. K-State shot 52 percent and made 10 3-pointers en route to 87 points, a season high in Big 12 play. If the Sooners don’t defend harder Sunday, Texas’ balanced attack will make them pay.

Sports Columnist

I'm the proud father of Gretchen and Holden. Devoted husband to Christy, who has been my best friend since biology class at Booker T. Washington. I covered the OU Sooners for 15 years. That was both challenging and rewarding. Now I get to write columns.
