Throwback Tulsa: Thousands welcome NIT champion TU home 40 years ago today

Nolan Richardson revived a Tulsa basketball program that had been comatose for five years and lifted it to new heights into one of the nation’s elite programs.

Richardson inherited a program that had five consecutive losing seasons and an 8-19 record in 1979-80. But, in his first year with a team stocked with his former juco players, Richardson, 38 at the time, led the Golden Hurricane to the 1981 NIT championship and a new era of Tulsa basketball was under way complete with polka dots, an enthusiast fan base, a frantic style of play, and of course, wins.
