An Oklahoma music artist who once toured with Dylan, Ripley died earlier this year.
Tommy Tripplehorn, former guitarist for Gary Lewis & The Playboys and father of actress Jeanne Tripplehorn, died March 15. He was 75. Said friend and fellow musician Gary Gilmore: “He was kind of the style of guitar player like Eric Clapton where he didn’t play that many notes, but he bent the notes and had, really, to me, my favorite kind of guitar sound.”
The Mad Dogs & Englishmen group that Joe Cocker led was put together with Tulsan Leon Russell and included Chuck Blackwell, Jim Keltner and Carl Radle, all big names in the Tulsa Sound.
What better way to recognize Oklahoma rock and blues pioneers than a loud, raucous party.
While country, blues and rock were holding their own as genres in the late 1950s and 1960s, Tulsa was incubating a new style that smashed all three together for something new.
Other inductees are Elvin Bishop, Jim Keltner, Chuck Blackwell and Lowell Fulson, making Tulsa the common thread for the class of 2014.
