One of the greatest athletes ever to come out of Oklahoma, Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, will be the guest of honor at the 12th annual Champions of Health Gala.
The Binger native spent 17 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, was twice named the league’s most valuable player, was named to the All-Star team 14 times, twice was the league’s home run leader and helped lead the Reds to two consecutive World Series wins. Bench is considered one of the finest players in the game at his position as catcher.
Bench will be the keynote speaker at the gala, which honors those who are making a difference in the health of Oklahomans, in hopes that their successes can be replicated in other communities across the state.
The Family & Children’s Services–Women in Recovery (WIR) program will receive the Dr. Rodney L. Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health, the highest honor of the Champions of Health Awards. WIR is a Tulsa-based program that focuses on improving the complex health and wellness needs of women facing long prison sentences for nonviolent, drug offenses by offering a holistic and intensive alternative health and treatment center.
Other honorees include Suzanne Nance Cyrus for her Action Based Learning Program, Oklahoma Project Woman, Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services, Inc., D-DENT and Oklahoma State University.
All proceeds from the Champions of Health Gala benefit the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, Inc., a 501©(3) organization providing basic health-care needs to Oklahoma children, with an emphasis on providing free childhood immunizations.
