Early in my career, I made a huge mistake. I thought I was destined for bigger things; a bigger paper, a bigger city and bigger assignments. Turns out I was wrong. I worked for the Tulsa World from 1995 until 2000 when I left to become a freelance photographer in Cincinnati, Oh.
I enjoyed my time in Cincinnati, but I am a community journalist. I love Tulsa. I love Oklahoma. To be a really good community journalist, I needed to be in the community I love most.
After close to 6 years in Cincinnati, I moved home and got my old job back at the Tulsa World. Some companies have a policy that they never re-hire employees. I am so glad the Tulsa World didn’t have that policy.
December 1 was the 10 year anniversary of my return to the Tulsa World. These photos are the photos that come to mind when I think of the last 10 years. There is at least 1 from each year. I don’t know if they are the best photos I have taken since I have been back. That is for others to decide I guess. Maybe it is the experience I had shooting it, the people I met or just a good photo, but these are the photos that stick out in my mind.
While I believe it was a mistake to leave, I’m glad I did. Nothing will show you how much you love your hometown more than leaving it for a while.
