Throwback Tulsa: Tulsa Roughnecks win North American Soccer League championship on this day in 1983

  • Updated

From 1978-84, Tulsa was a major league soccer town. The Tulsa Roughnecks competed in the North American Soccer League. The NASL provided a U.S. stage for international stars like Pele and Franz Beckenbauer.

The Roughnecks won the 1983 Soccer Bowl -- the NASL's Super Bowl -- in Vancouver, beating Toronto 2-0 on goals by Njego Pesa and Ron Futcher.

Tulsa embraced its champions, but financial difficulties soon spelled ragnarok for the franchise and the league.

Pro soccer made its return to Tulsa with the nickname Roughnecks in 2015, which became FC Tulsa in December 2019.
