Theatre North has been Tulsa’s primary African-American theater company for four decades, and for much of that time, Maybelle Wallace has been its driving force.
She became executive director in 1991, and has continued in that role voluntarily ever since.
Under her guidance, Theatre North has specialized in works focusing on the black experience, including “Who Will Sing for Lena?,” “Miss Evers’ Boys,” and “Crowns,” as well as many works of the late August Wilson.
A major milestone for the group came last year, as it won the award for Outstanding Theater Production at the 2018 Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence for its production of Wilson’s “Seven Guitars.”
It marked the first time Theatre North had won a major TATE award, this one coming with $10,000 cash.
