The Oklahoma State Department of Education has named a Broken Arrow Public Schools administrator as the state’s next deputy superintendent of assessment and accountability.
Janet Dunlop, who has served as associate superintendent of instructional services at BAPS since 2010, is set to join the state Education Department on Nov. 8. She will replace Kathryn “Katie” Dunlap, who is retiring after 10 months with the state.

“Dr. Dunlop is a tireless advocate for the academic success of Oklahoma’s schoolchildren and brings an impressive record of experience to the position,” said State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister. “I am confident that her breadth of knowledge and commitment to excellence will prove invaluable.”
Dunlop was instrumental in crafting the new Oklahoma Academic Standards for all public schools and was recently named the state’s assistant superintendent of the year by the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration and the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators.
She has been tapped to assume leadership over assessment and accountability at a critical time, as Oklahoma is in the process of overhauling both its state-mandated student testing program and school grading system because of the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act, as well as state legislation that eliminated high-stakes testing for high school students.
“I am honored by the opportunity to serve our State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister and public schools in Oklahoma,” Dunlop said in a release. “With the passage of ESSA, Oklahoma is in a unique position to make choices that will improve the way our schools measure and report student learning.
“In addition, with hard work, we can provide our students, parents and communities with an accountability system that provides rich and detailed information about school successes and opportunities to support our schools.”
Dunlop’s entire higher education, culminating in a doctorate, was completed through Oklahoma State University. She began her career teaching English and language arts in Sand Springs, Jenks and Berryhill public schools, before serving as principal and assistant principal at Union Public Schools and an adjunct professor of education at OSU.
