Mike Simons

Years in media: 25

Why I got into this business: I got into the business because I loved taking photos. I've stayed in the business because I absolutely love the people I meet and the stories I get to tell. And, periodically, what we do really helps vulnerable people.

In one sentence, why is journalism important: Journalism is important because it holds the powerful accountable. Print journalism does that better than any other medium. It is also important, because everyone deserves to have their story told. There are so many wonderful people who, without the media, would be completely anonymous.

What is your favorite local hangout: Sidewalks with my camera.

Favorite movie: Royal Tenenbaums

Favorite book: East of Eden

Favorite quote: "I don't take sides, I take pictures" fictional photojournalist Russell Price (played by Nick Nolte) from the movie "Under Fire." Bad movie, good quote.
