The second issue of Switchyard, the print element in the University of Tulsa’s multi-media Switchyard Festival, was a winner at the 2024 James Beard Foundation’s Media Award ceremony, held Saturday, June 8, in Chicago.
Switchyard won Best Food Coverage in a General Interest Publication for its Winter 2024 issue, which focused on a wide range of food-related topics, and was produced in conjunction with a day-long event that featured such nationally known chefs as Tom Colicchio and Sean Sherman, as well as several of the contributors to the publication.
Newly opened Barons on 1st impressed our critic James D. Watts Jr. so much, it earned five stars in all categories: food, service and atmosphere. Watts and Jimmie Tramel discuss why the honor is so rare.
In an interview with the Tulsa World in advance of the issue’s publication, editor Ted Genoways said the theme was “a celebration of food and the community it builds but also an assessment of how our perspective on food has changed in a post-pandemic landscape.”
Switchyard shared the award with the Food & Environment Reporting Network, which partnered with TU in the publication, and featured several of the issue’s stories on its website.
