Tulsa World Magazine was honored after its first year of publication with the Great Plains Journalism Award for Magazine of the Year, contest officials announced Monday.

Tulsa World staff also won a Great Plains award in the General News Reporting category for coverage of the fatal shooting of Terence Crutcher.

Mike Simons, Tulsa World photojournalist, received the award for Spot News Video for his coverage of a double homicide.

The World was competing against print, web and magazine journalists from eight states — Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The award for Newspaper of the Year went to the Omaha World-Herald, which beat out the Tulsa World and The Oklahoman.

The newspaper at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, The Baker Orange, was named Student Newspaper of the Year.

Four student journalists also were awarded $1,250 scholarships named after Dan Harrison, former Tulsa Press Club president and ONEOK Inc. executive.
