Eric Martin belted a three-run triple in the bottom of the
fifth inning to lead Memorial High School to a 15-7 victory
over Miami in the Memorial Tournament championship baseball
game at LaFortune Park on Saturday night.
Martin finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
"He's a pitcher that just started to DH for us," said
Memorial coach Tom MacKenna. "We struggled at the plate
and he came through with some big hits."
Sandy Farrell also collected three hits for Memorial (7-7)
to cap off MVP honors for the tournament.
"Sandy was 1-for-24 until this tournament," said MacKenna.
"He's the best returning player we have and we needed a
performance like this."
Jansen Bruce scattered four hits over four innings of relief
to pick up his second victory.
Neither starting pitcher lasted long as windy conditions
made for an ideal hitting situation.
Miami (17-4) chased Memorial starter Travis Tapley in the
second when it took a 4-1 lead. The Chargers sent Wardog
pitcher Scott Rupert out in the second as well. Memorial
scored five runs on three hits and one Miami error in that inning.
The Chargers put the game away in the fifth with an eight-run
burst. Run-scoring hits by Farrell, Martin and Chance Dick
keyed the rally.
"Before the year started we thought we had the people to compete for a
state championship," said Farrell. "This gives us new life."
Jenks beat Stillwater 6-5 in the third-place game. Todd
Berman picked up the victory for the Trojans.
